FEATURES
HELLS
GATE NATIONAL PARK
The name Hells Gate is derived from the most
impressive feature in the Park, the Njorowa Gorge, which runs through the
middle of the park. The gorge formed the overflow of Lake Naivasha between
lower and middle Cambrian times. The Park was gazetted under legal notice
number 13 of 2nd February 1984 and covers 68.25 Km². The park boundaries are
delineated on boundary plan number 204/55. The Park is accessible via tarmac
road from Nairobi (90 Kilometres) via Naivasha Town on the South Lake Road at a
Junction 5 Kilometres south of Naivasha. Hell's Gate National Park provides a
variety of wildlife, unusual flora and many species of birds and is one of the
two only Kenyan Parks where Climbing, Walking and Biking are allowed. Covered
by ashes from the Longonot eruption which occurred 100 years ago, the Park is
famous for its geothermal station, Lower Gorge and spectacular sceneries
(cliffs, volcanoes, gorges, geothermal steam). The Park is characterized by
diverse topography and geological scenery. It is an important home of a rare
bird of prey, the lammergeyer. The Park is surrounded by a number of private
ranches which are a home to a wide variety of wildlife species.
Named for the intense geothermal activity
within its boundaries, the Hell's Gate National Park is a remarkable quarter of
the Great Rift Valley. Spectacular scenery including the towering cliffs,
water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub clad volcanoes and belching
plumes of geothermal steam make it one of the most atmospheric Parks in Africa.
Hell’s Gate is an ideal venue for a day trip from Nairobi where, in addition to
the bio-diversity that includes raptors, visitors can enjoy mountain biking,
rock climbing and a natural spa
DAPHNE
SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST
Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage, located in a secluded area of the Nairobi National Park, where
orphaned baby elephants amongst other animals are taken care of by a dedicated
team of conservationists.
The orphanage is run
by Daphne Sheldrick, the wife of the late famous Naturalist, David William
Sheldrick who was the founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya from
its inception in 1948 to 1976.
At 1100 Hours, the
baby animals are brought from the National Park for a mud-bath at the
orphanage, where for an hour you can get close to them and sometimes touch
them.
You may not feed the
animals but will get a chance to view the handlers feeding them. The Private Session strictly between 1500 Hours
to 1600 Hours each day allows you to see the animals in private and
you will be able to interact with them.
Sheldrick Baby
Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi National Park drive takes approximately 45
Minutes and is open for only an hour daily for the public. You can visit
between 1100 Hours and 1200 Hours every day and see the elephants being fed and
playing.
In addition, there is
a keeper who will give a talk about the elephants, where they came from, how
they are getting on, and how some of the previous orphans are progressing. You
can get really close to the elephants. The orphanage also takes in rhinos and
so if you are lucky you will get the chance to see a young rhino.
KAREN BLIXEN MUSEUM/KAZURI BEAD CENTRE/ GIRAFFE CENTRE
Karen Blixen Museum, Kazuri Bead Centre & Giraffe Centre Tour enable you to visit 3 great locations in one tour. All
situated on the outskirts of Nairobi in the Karen District, this tour takes
about 4 Hours.
Karen Blixen
Museum
It is located on the
outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the
First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark. At the foot of
Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure
in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen.
The house was used
during the filming of the famous movie that immortalized Karen Blixen's book by
the same name ('Out of Africa'). The Museum has beautifully landscaped gardens
and an all-encompassing Ngong Hills View. Time takes approximately 1 Hour at
most.
The Giraffe
Center
It is a wonderful and
refreshing experience undertaken during the city excursion. The tour gives a
completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity
to view giraffes as well as feed them .......There is an impressive variety of
bird's species which can be viewed through the year. Time takes approximately 1
Hour at most.
Kazuri bead
centre
A a self-help
women project where hand made ceramics and jewellery are produced. A visit to
the workshop and craft centre will take around one hour and here you will see
the various processes.
Our guide will show
you around where you will see the whole process from the molding of raw clay
through to the glazing, decorating and threading of beads as finished products.
The salesroom is attractively laid out and a beautiful place to visit.
Kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili and this describes each and
every beautifully hand-made ceramic bead which is shaped by hand by the women
who work at the Kazuri workshop. The beads are kiln fired once, glazed and then
fired again before being strung.
NAIROBI
Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The city
and its surrounding area also form the Nairobi Province. The name
"Nairobi" comes from the Masai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, which
translates to "the place of cool waters". However, it is popularly
known as the "Green City in the Sun".
During Kenya's colonial period, the city became a center for the
colony's coffee, tea and sisal industry. Nairobi is also the capital of the
Nairobi County. The city lies on the Nairobi River, in the south of the nation,
and has an elevation of 1795 meters above sea-level.
Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with a current estimated
population of about 4 million. Nairobi is currently the 13th largest city in
Africa. Nairobi is now one of the most prominent cities in Africa
politically and financially.
Home to many companies and organizations, including the United
Nations Environment Programme and the UN Office in Africa, Nairobi is
established as a hub for business and culture. The Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE)
is one of the largest in Africa, ranked fourth in terms of trading volume and
capable of making 10 million trades a day.
Between 1896 and 1898, the Uganda Railway Company paid for by the
British laid railway tracks from Mombasa to Nairobi. Built under tremendous
human hardship, 600 miles long and six years to build, “The Lunatic Line”
transformed East Africa, and by 1907, Nairobi had become the new capital.
Situated 100 miles south of the Equator, and 300 miles west of the
Indian Ocean at an elevation of 5,500 feet, Nairobi’s pleasant climate has been
an important factor in its booming success. The nights are cool, the days are
warm, the temperature rarely exceeds 75 degrees and humidity is low.
The beauty of Nairobi greets the visitor already from the air
sighting the colorful Bougainvillea lining avenues, highways, and the beautiful
Jacaranda Trees blossoming everywhere.
An oasis of modern conveniences, Nairobi offers the visitor an
array of high caliber hotels and excellent restaurants and an abundance of
African culture and art. It is a virtual Spice for shopping which often start
with a visit to a local Safari Outfitter for a custom-fit Safari Suit.
In addition to many smart boutiques and art galleries, the
shopping experience will include traditional colorful outdoor African markets,
and while on Safari, the warm and friendly tribal roadside vendors welcome
negotiating their prices with you.
Among the many Kenyan artefacts offered are Masai tribal ornaments
and spears, Merchaum pipes, hand woven sisal baskets and bags, as well as a
dazzling array of batiks, multi-colored fabrics, and pottery and ebony
carvings.
Elegant jewellery, gems and corals are plentiful and inexpensive
and Kenya offers unexpected items such as colonial furniture and antique
Arabian doors.
