The Tarangire National Park gets its name from the Tarangire River which flows across the park.  The park is on the northern circuit of Tanzania safaris and covers an area of 2,600 sq. km and located a few kilometers from Arusha town making it a very popular place for day trips.  Here you find not only a diverse geologic landscape but also the wildlife, with nine distinct vegetation zones ranging from savanna grassland to wooded thickets. It is a place to see the captivating giant baobab trees and umbrella acacia trees famous in the country.

Between June and November when the surrounding plains are drying out thousands of animals wander to Tarangire, attracted by its permanent river; making the park second only to Ngorongoro in the concentration of wildlife. Here you will see huge elephant herds in the forest along the river,  zebras, leopards, lions, wildebeest, giraffe, gazelles, lesser kudu, waterbucks and oryx.  If you are lucky you may spot a giant python for which the park is famous or the kudu and roan antelope, rare species in Northern Tanzania. The park is also famous for migrant birds.

Best Time to Visit

The Tarangire national park can be visited all year round but the dry season (June - September) particularly is best for the sheer numbers of animals.

How to Get There

The park is reached by charter flights from Arusha and Lake Manyara. Easy drive from Arusha or Lake Manyara following a surfaced road to within 7km of the main entrance gate, can continue on to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. It can also be accessed by the tarmac road between Arusha and Dodoma.
